| TITLE: PCST Cager reign supreme in UCAA ‘07 |
| WRITER: |
The Urdaneta City Athletic Association (UCAA) Basketball Tournament 2007 had already reached its final round. The said event took place at the Urdaneta Cultural Center last October 5. It was the championship game between the struggling PCST and the STI players who had resisted fighting in their battle series. At the beginning of the quarter rounds, the two competing teams were still in warm-up condition. Their scores were running in a short distance with each other. The complex hall became an echo room of shouts and extra noises from the ecstatic audience as their idols took in action. Most of the audience were students from different schools still in their uniforms as if they had just escaped from their classes just to watch the breath-taking event of the day. Others were adults and some were children who, first on their parts, wanted to amuse themselves from boredom. The Philippine National Police (PNP) had provided security to ensure that peace and order situation is handled from the crowd. The second quarter had grown warmer as it ended in a 31-37 score in favor of PCST. To relieve the excitement of the audience, selected nursing students performed a dance number before the third quarter round. The players at that time were half bathed through their sweats. They were already tired by the action. The audience, especially the students, had aroused in cheering and shouting to lessen the tension and weariness among the players. The fourth quarter was the crucial round as PCST was on a two or three point extent from third quarter. Every heartbeat trembled in tension as the scores were not a matter of predicting the champion of the game. Every shoot for a point had rendered a sigh to everyone. The last minute became PCST’s turning point as Cuaresma took three points and a couple of free-throw five seconds before the end of the game. The last seconds became a period of acceptance for STI as the good Lord granted the championship trophy to PCST. The game ended, 89-91. As the confetti of triumph flew and scattered in the atmosphere, a big tarpaulin, ascribed with the acronym “PCST”, the word “Champion” and the PCST varsity team on the background was laid down beside the railings of the upper part of the complex hall. It seemed that the mastermind of the presentation had already smelled the sweet scent of victory from its yet unopened flower or else they had been optimistic enough to think that all will go to their favor. The awarding of trophies was held in the presence of Urdaneta City mayor Amado Perez. Other awards were received by STI and UCU but of course PCST got the most. The court event had ended in picture takings & shake hands. |
