TITLE: On responsibility and criticism
WRITER: Kennet Arreola

PCST’s official campus paper, The PCST Collegian, stands in its obligation to responsible campus journalism. However it cannot stand by itself. It is our pen, yet it will never write alone, it needs our coordination. It has been reopened to reveal what is hidden, to relate what had happened, and to cultivate our young minds in different aspects of our free society.

As of now, The PCST Collegian is still trying to reestablish itself through recovering its vital parts from the ruins of its fortification. We are the trellis needed for its crawling vines in order to stand firm and bear fruits of benefaction. Let us not lose this given opportunity nor ignore its significance for it will bring us some sort of benefits in the future.

We, students, are part of The PCST Collegian. We must patronize it and be involved in its commitments. It is at the same time a part of the PCST institution.

It was put up as a possible opposition to what is not due for the students. However, it will never be the cause of the institution’s collapse because if that would be so, we have made our own degradation.

Criticisms that will come their way to its pages are part of the component tasks that we should perform to attain the essence of responsible campus journalism. We should think on it positively. To criticize means to reveal the weaknesses and failures. It means caring through scolds. To criticize is to care for a thing or for what is happening. It brings a further comprehension of an object or idea whether it should be improved or to be taken as an example.

What we, the PCST Collegian editorial staff, emphasize is that we are all involved. If one has done right or committed a mistake, we are all affected. Let us do our actions in the wisest way. Our voices had already been heard, let us wait for commitments.

WRITER:

The PCST Collegian interviewed 100 students about the latest issue confronting our College nowadays. Here is what a few of them said.

PCST Collegian: Now that PCST is anticipating the visit of the CHED commission en banc this November, we are getting nearer to universityhood. How do you feel about PCST finally becoming PUNP before the end of this year?

Anonymous: To graduate in a university is really a pride on our part; because it’s a plus point once we will apply for a job.

NJ Atienza (BSA 2): It is not about the name but it means that PCST has already increased its capability and standard in imparting learning and knowledge to its students. That is why I feel excited about it.

Abel Gumangan (BSMT2): I am very glad to hear about it. This is an evidence that our school is progressing and going stronger.

Santa C. Ferrer: I am very excited and honored because my school will be more competitive and excellent.

Jason C. Rapisura: I will be proud if PCST will be a one of a kind university.

Micha de Vera (HRM): Well it is great if PCST will become a university. The students will be more confident and competitive.

      J. de Leon: Sad po kasi mas sumikat tayo sa PCST at mas magandang name ito. Many years ng nakatayo ang school na ‘to tapos biglang papalitan ang name. Siguro maraming maninibago.

      L. Galileo (BSIT): Happy and proud because finally PCST will become PUNP. I hope that once we are already a university, we will have more competitive instructors also.

TITLE: Editorial – Soaring on the Wings of Change
WRITER:

Before the end of this year, PCST is PCST no more!

Such is what the visit of CHED’s commission en banc this November and a series of accreditations for the college are for– that after 13 formative years; we will soon be a university. We will soon be soaring on the wings of change.

This indeed is a good news. This, if it really comes to pass, calls for a celebration. However, let us not miss the fact that with the wings by which we will soon soar as a young university comes a greater responsibility and a greater commitment to excellence.

Let us therefore keep our focus on the vision that we hold as an institution and refuse to allow the euphoria of the moment to blind us of the reality that there is still a long way to go. That after each horizon we are able to reach, if we will only turn our eyes, there is still another horizon that looms.

Let us therefore not lose sight of the fact that we are still on the verge of growing and maturing as an institution. Let us not loose our wings by coming too close to the sun for like Icarus of old, our wings are yet fastened with beeswax.

TITLE: Reviving the Mighty Pen
WRITER:

The greatest revolution ever staged in the world is not the revolution of arms fought with the blasting nuclear warheads, machine gun fires and cannon shots. It is not the revolution of military technology when nations turn against nations with their jets dog fighting and spreading terror in the skies. No, the greatest revolution ever staged in the world is the revolution of minds fought with the mighty pen.

The most severe devastations to ever wreck the planet are not dramatized with the rubbles of the World Trade Center towers in New York City though it is an inanimate testament of how cruel and inhuman a war of arms can be. It is not forever etched on the pages of history through the melancholy memoirs of the Cold War or of the two great wars we have fought so fiercely yet failed. No. The most severe devastations to ever wreck the planet are the devastations brought by the mighty pen; when it brought down nations by igniting them to kindle war against each other, or when it caused societies, civilizations and cultures to collapse after swallowing in the poison it inked to their minds.

The mighty pen, I have to say, is both an asset and a liability. Whoever uses its power can build or destroy, promote or demote. After all, the pen that wrote the Holy Book which put the United States of America to its grandeur is the same pen that wrote the Red Book—the Red Book that now urges people all over the world to turn against existing governments through the delusions of terrorism and the archaic notions of bloody war.

I have to say that though the most sacred monument of any free nation or institution is the freedom of the mighty pen, that freedom can nevertheless be an expression of bondage as well. Most call it irresponsible journalism. I call it a degradation of our freedom of expression for freedom too can never be totally free if not bound in some way by truth and a sense of responsibility for the common good.

For PCST, this day is a monumental day. It is so because today we are freeing the mighty pen to use its power. Whether for our betterment or for our downfall is a choice none but us has.

And choose we did. This year’s editorial staff chose a banner that describes our philosophy as the campus journalists of this college.

We have chosen to strive hard for being the catalyst of positive change through responsible campus journalism. As a catalyst, we aspire to hasten our progress as an institution yet growing, as an institution still beginning to realize that progress is at our fingertips and is within our reach.

As a catalyst for positive change, we will not wallow in the mud of criticism for progress and excellence is not the work of the administration alone, but a partnership of the whole complexity of mechanisms whining harmoniously together to propel this institution in its course.

But rest assured, we will be vigilant. We will not keep mum when we know it is time to shout. We will not hold our peace when we know our voices, no matter how little, need to be heard.

We will be the watchmen for truth. We will not stare blindly, and pretend that everything is good when it’s not.

This, we will do because at the vanguard of progress, we are the mighty pen and it is the hands of the students that hold and direct us.
