TITLE: PCST braces for university status
WRITER:

Thirteen years of toil is about to end. For PCST, the dawning of a new day has begun.

Pangasinan Colleges of Science and Technology (PCST) in line with its vision to become a leader- higher education institution in the province braces for university status by the end of this year as it awaits the visit of the CHED commission en banc (the chairman and four other commissioners).

After this visit, PCST will hopefully be granted university status. It will then be called Pan-pacific University North Philippines (PUNP) and will receive a new level of autonomy from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). This autonomy, as provided by law, includes full administrative deregulation, financial deregulation in terms of setting tuition and other fees, full curricular autonomy, authority to graduate students without prior approval of CHED and without need for special orders, priority funding assistance, priority for government subsidy for faculty development and limited visitation and supervision by CHED on academic programs with level II reaccredited status..

As of press time, PCST has already passed the evaluation of the CHED technical panel. When the evaluation ofthe commission en banc’s visit proves that it has a strong research program, it will be awarded university status by the Commission on Higher Education– one of the two ways on how such a status is granted.

The law provides that a college can achieve university status in two ways– through accreditation and through a university status in two ways– through accreditation and through a strong research program which was provided for by a memorandum from the Commission on Higher Education. Through accreditation, a college has to have five academic programs with level III accredited status to be given universityhood.

To date, three out of four academic programs aiming for level III accreditation have been evaluated by PACU-COA. These are the teacher education, criminology and commerce programs.
