| TITLE: Philippine Diaspora |

Yes, I can still remember when I was a child. People often ask me about what I foresee of myself in the fore, and I answered them for a hundredth time; I will be a teacher and a teacher who will serve my own country. Our country is known worldwide as a prime producer of manpower, skilled workers and now, even professionals. Is this fact to be proud of or it may be a threat to our country? Our professionals take caregiver courses and their very reason is to earn money abroad. Dollars, Euro, Dinar, Yen and other monetary units abroad act like a strong flash that blind our Filipino Professionals into trying the gigantic opportunities, playing their cards safe and trying their last resort to escape from the quicksand of poverty. Like a cancer that slowly kills our country, this so called “brain drain” that is happening right now destroys the bond of Filipinos. I am yearning for the scenario of Filipinos serving fellow Filipinos in their own country and Filipinos serving his roots with wisdom where he acquires all qualities that foreign countries admire. What will be the future of Juan dela Cruz who is commonly begging centavos on the streets just to have a few pennies to buy the cheapest antibiotics from a government pharmacy and the saddest part of it is the future of the Filipino students who partake knowledge from a rotten book considering their number in the classroom shaded with coconut leaves and old bamboos, if the noble teacher flies to the greener pasture but leaves the Filipino youth a fragile and undirected future. Is it a sign of painful stomach, a dried fish to salt and a child to a social problem that resolves hunger to theft, killing, addiction, and be a part of the country’s liability, a toxic blood that makes the bloodstream of our country numb and soon dead? Philippine Diaspora– is it a nightmare of our country or a dream come true for every Filipino? |

| TITLE: A Cop in Our Midst |

You see him everyday, a simple old man that most won’t spare a second look. You may have known him well with his line…” Yes Brother!…”(and later imitated mostly by students). …”Hello Sir, Mam…” ( with a smile on his face) while waving his hand over every vehicle moving on the road whenever students and faculty in the campus. The scenario of his daily routine with his gestures and evident courtesy and his greetings to everybody really caught my attention. So one day, I asked myself what the other students are probably asking, “What’s with him, and who is he?” He’s just an ordinary employee of our school and though he is, I decided to give him a chance to be famous anyway (so I guess) until I found out later that he is famous and well loved in his own little way. Some students and faculty here in our school call him “Manong” but his real name is Fernando Ducusin. He was born on June 1, 1948 and his family hails from Binalonan, Pangasinan. One afternoon, over Nestea Iced Tea which he shared to us, Manong Fernando related his life to me and a friend who for having nothing to do agreed to accompany me for an interview with him. He said that he really first aspired to be an Agriculturist, but he wasn’t permitted by his parents. He also aspired to become a soldier, but then again his parents rejected this thought. ”So, I took up Education, instead, at the Baguio Colleges Foundation for only two years, and unfortunately—Kahit anong gawin kong pag-aaral noon, walang pumapasok sa ulo ko. Sa ROTC lang mataas ang grade ko”, Manong Fernando quipped. Way back in 1973- 1989, he added that he worked as a Policeman and a Traffic Enforcer. He then served as P/FC for seventeen years and during his service, he had received the Most Outstanding Police/Traffic Enforcer Award in the entire PNP-Regional Office. That began the influx of various awards from the PNP which extends up to this time. I asked Manong Fernando how he found his way to PCST. He said that he started working at PCST in 2000 as a guard/traffic enforcer also. After 4 years, he was absorbed and pulled out of his work here by the Mayor of Binalonan. After a couple of years, he had again landed a job at PCST where he proudly said, “Nagagalak at masaya ako sa trabaho ko para sa mga tao dito.” For the faculty, staff and students of the college, Manong Fernando is one of the most diligent and efficient workers in the PCST campus. When I said we’ll also talk about his love life, he flashed a toothy grin and said that he was happily married for thirty eight years to Ms. Adelina Ramos who is also from Binalonan. They were blessed with nine children. Two are still in high school at present, while the others are still dependent to their parents although they have their own family now. “What I wish for—is that, I could still have the chance to give everything for my family. I really want my two remaining children to finish their studies,” Manong Fernando said with a sigh. He also related in his interview, that he would also like to share his thoughts to all students in the campus, particularly—that, cooperation and unity is important to everybody’s life! Manong Fernando said that his principle is “to continue… and aim for the best in life.” With that, I grabbed my bag, and mumbled my thanks. My interview with Manong has ended. My 30 minute- chat with Manong Fernando made me realize that we are all bound with opportunities in our lives. We need not to be a despondent. As we are continuously taking our way, his story may lead us to what true happiness really means. It is about pursuing what is important to your life. For once, let us put ourselves in Manong Fernando’s shoes. “What if, we’re him? Would we do the same thing he’s done and continuously does with his job? Would we want to take his place under the scorching heat of the sun?” “Would we also wear a smile for everybody uncaring if they choose to smile back or simply pretend we’re not there? This is to remind everybody that we must value our fellow’s effort, courage and efficiency in doing their job. Let us start giving credits to those people who truly deserve them. They may not be the lustrous star we imagine them to be but they are shining as brightly anyway. You are the Best, Manong Fernando, Keep on smiling and whistling!” “Yes, brother!, hello, sir; ma’am…” |

HOLD OUT FOR THE GREAT TIMES. “You have no idea what could be waiting for you right around the bend, on the other side of the place where you got stuck,” encourages Wieder. IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO START OVER AND GET IT RIGHT. Chope cites some late but great bloomers, including Coco Chanel, who introduced her signature woman’s suit at 71, and Col. Harland Sanders, aka Mr. KFC himself (yes he’s real), who put up his famous fastfood chain at 61. WE’VE GOT NOTHING BUT TIME, AND IT IS ON OUR SIDE. This is why we continue to be provided with the opportunity to repeat and re-create in our lives,” says Iyanla Vanzant in One Day my Soul Just Opened Up. Get up and start working on that next, better chapter in your life. |
